Chapter 3

As the weeks passed, the relationship continued to deepen and intensify. Derek grew intensely proud of Tony and his metalwork. He even arranged for a Saturday day off, when he should have been working, so he could attend the opening of an art exhibit featuring his lover’s work. Tony, for his part, had mixed emotions about Derek’s work. Although proud that his lover was protecting their town, the more his love for Derek deepened, the more he worried that some work-related mishap could befall Derek. The incident in the bank while they were on vacation had brought home to him in sharper focus just how dangerous police work was. “I wouldn’t want anything to happen to you!” became a recurring refrain.

The art exhibit brought Tony new customers, and he found himself putting in longer hours than ever to keep up with the demand for his work. Most of these new customers were business entities, and not all of them local. They wanted his works to exhibit in their reception areas, showrooms, and conference rooms. One that resembled a surreal dog was purchased by a dog grooming salon, and another, that resembled an airplane, was bought by the owner of Surfspray Aero.

Despite his busyness with paying work, Tony found time to create and donate a tower sculpture for the electric train set in Todd’s basement. Tony and Derek had been meaning to attend one of the monthly exhibitions for the benefit of the children’s hospital, but since Derek worked most weekends, this hadn’t been possible as yet. The few free weekends he’d had hadn’t coincided with one when there was an exhibition.

“I really want to show up for Todd,” Derek said, not for the first time. “It’s the least we can do for him. He put us together.”

“There’s nothing we can do to begin to repay him for that,” Tony said, squeezing Derek’s hand, “but you’re right. When’s the next weekend you have off?”

“In two weeks.”

“Maybe that’ll be a weekend Todd will be

exhibiting the trains.”

“I hope so.”

A few days after that conversation, the couple

made plans to go out for dinner. “Where do you feel like eating?” Derek asked Tony considerately. “I don’t know. What appeals to you?”

Derek gave it a few minutes’ thought before he made up his mind. Then he suggested, “Let’s go to Mickey’s Madness. I think I want shrimp.” While Mickey’s Madness did serve a limited number of other dishes, their specialties—and it was admittedly an odd combination—were various omelets and various shrimp dishes.

Mentally reviewing the choices in advance, Derek said, “Unless the night’s special is something seriously tempting, I believe I’ll have the vanilla shrimp.” The vanilla shrimp, which also featured garlic in the preparation, was a perennial favorite at Mickey’s. When they got there, they learned that the night’s special was a cold shrimp dish involving avocados, and good as that sounded, Derek stuck with his initial intention, ordering the vanilla shrimp. As for Tony, he ordered Mediterranean shrimp, involving cumin, cayenne, browned onions, and
